The Car

M. T. Varkey would have longed to drive the first edition of the Maruti 800 Car as much as Rajiv Gandhi did, who had a pivotal role in making people’s car a reality in India. Mr. Varkey had saved some money then and booked a Maruti 800 for his family.

That was when Fr. GK was struggling to gather money for the plot he wanted to buy for the community church. Having failed to make up all money required to pay the seller, Fr. GK approached Varkey Chettan requesting to support the parish for purchasing the plot. “A car is less important than a church father”, said Varkichan, adding “The Lord who travels in the wings of air, will provide me a car”. Varkey Chettan gave all money he saved for the car to Fr. GK for the purpose. The purchase was possible only by the sacrifices of several people like Varkey Chettan. Fr. GK gracefully remembers all those people who with a missionary mind considered passing the faith and traditions to their children and grandchildren. They have literally kept the faith alive in setting where they were far away from their homeland.
